Level
Three: "Intellectual Talk"
We are walking up the stairs on
the communication ladder. Step one was "Hallway Talk".
Step two: "Reporter Talk". Today we take step three:
Intellectual Talk - "Do you know what I think?" Now I am
getting ready to share my ideas on the subject.
Wife says to husband, "I heard
today that George has cataracts." Her husband responds,
"I think he should go see Dr. Gilespie. I hear he's the
best in town." "I don't know," his wife responds, "I've
heard that Dr. Black is good. He's younger and has the
latest techniques." "I'd go for the experience of Dr.
Gilespie," her husband responds. Then they move to
another topic of conversation.
After the basic information was
shared (George has cataracts), then they both shared
their ideas on the subject. Typically when people talk
on this level they watch for the response of the other
person. If the person gets defensive, then the other
person will bring the conversation to a close and
retreat to a safer subject. Far better to listen and
give honest response.
