The
Need for Significance
The need for significance is the
emotional force behind much of our behavior. We want our
lives to count for something. Feeling loved by a spouse
enhances our sense of significance. We reason, If
someone loves me, I must have significance.
Ultimately God’s love is the
greatest evidence of my significance. I stand at the
apex of the created order. I have the ability to think
in abstract terms, and communicate my thoughts by words.
By means of printed words, I can benefit from those who
have preceded me. I experience the death of a family
member and I sense that there is existence beyond the
material. God’s love led him to communicate to us
something of His nature and his provision for us. Love
that is not communicated is not true love.
Don’t assume that your spouse
knows your love. You must communicate your love. So you
are not much with words. Then visit your local card
store. Find a card that says something you really like.
Buy it for your spouse. Underline the words you think
are important and give it to your spouse. Your
expression of love may fall like spring rain on the
parched soul of your spouse.
